To be honest we bought a slimline air conditioner from Homebase for about £90 last year - smaller than most airconditioners and weighed about 20kg. Added to the weight in the car but was a godsend in temperatures of 38-40, especially at night.

We open every window and not bother with sleeping bags, just light quilt cover.

Best thing to keep the heat out is to keep windows closed during the day when the sun is hotest, keep curtains / blinds closed too, then throw them all open in the evening when thwe air cools.  trouble is in many foreign climates like south of france the evening air is not much cooler!

Be carefull leaving the windows and the blinds closed when sunny,I just had all my windows replaced(polyplastic)
it is suspected that the build up of heat between the panes may be the cause of delamination.
The new windows have a picture on them with a cross through it illustrating that windows and blinds should not be closed in full sun.

Good job you were there.

We leave windows and the door open until dusk but then tend to close them because of insects. We use a 12inch oscillating fan. We also leave  the smaller roof vents up. If you have a rooflight with a fan that can suck a lot of hot air out of the van, likewise using the blown air just on cold can also cool things down a little.

So how does one get on opening windows when the van is in storage when it's sunny?

And if it comes to it why does it only happen to new windows of recent manufacture and not to older windows?

I think if you keep the windows closed during the day the van will get much hotter than the ambient air temperature and will be cooking by the time you open the windows at dusk.

Tried the closed windows and blinds thing, worked in the house not in the caravan Now just open all the windows, close the fly screens and try to get as much airflow as possible, also take a small fan. If it's really too hot at night we always have the option of the blow up sofa/double bed in the awning!

We also took a table top oscillating fan to the Vendee last year which was brilliant at night. £5.99 from B&Q I think it was.

"And if it comes to it why does it only happen to new windows of recent manufacture and not to older windows?"

Apparently there has been a production failure in recent times involving many many windows produced for a range of vans. Manufacturers have the serial batch numbers of affected windows. They are also affected by "flexing" where the window bends and each pane scratches the other so that it looks like powder on the inside of the pane. If each pane "powder" mirrors the marks on the other pane it is likely the case that the window has flexed and each pane has scratched the other.

Mainly affects the centre front window I believe.

"So how does one get on opening windows when the van is in storage when it's sunny?"

The manufacturers recommendation is to only close the blinds halfway.
My van manual states that the blinds should never be fully closed with the windows fully closed in full sunlight.

I paid £710 for 6 windows that was a 65% reduction of the normal replacement cost as Polyplastic admit they were at fault.

Thats great info thanks - I think I'll nip to B&Q this week and pick up a small fan for the front and prob another for the kids room at the back.  Caravan engineer who checked over our van advised not to leave the blinds down when not in use or in sunny conditions as the UV damages them & the blinds units cost £200 each to replace.  OH gets eaten alive by mossies so the mosquito blinds & door will be fully utilised.

Would you leave your van unattended during the day on site with your windows open though?

No way!

Our handbook has no warning re using the blinds in full sun, ours are the pleated type. When out we close everything and leave the air con on low fan and 22 degrees. This keeps the van cool for when we return.

Previous van we used the Omnivent and a small fan.

We don't use sleeping bags, just a lightweight duvet, much easier to kick off in hot weather.

At night we usually open a couple of windows for cross-ventilation rather than using the air con.
